So, may I ask, why is not UCO involved? This situation has existed for about 3 years now. David Israel has been aware of this situation for at least that long.

He, David Israel, has spent time with Kelly in a friendly atmosphere. Is that why UCO did not join the suit? He is one of the President's friends?

So, I ask why is not UCO part of this lawsuit?

Bits and Pieces for ED

So, the new road job done at the clubhouse looks good. Or so it seems. Except for the fact that nobody paid attention to the Scheduled Delegates Assembly meeting. 1/2 the road was closed for repair.

So there was the usual heavy traffic and pretty much the parking lot was 1/2 blocked all day.

A close look at the job shows the cracks, again. It is only the first day. What does the future hold? Cheap is expensive.

So lets see if we can put the lifts and elevator situation at the Hasting Pool in proper perspective. First off the Millennium Agreement states that the cost new equipment is to be born by Mr. Levy. Any repairs to the equipment is to be born by UCO. So we are talking big bucks here, somewhere in the vicinity of $75,000 and up. Switching from a lift to an elevator is not going to cost the Village. Fixing the existing lifts will.

So before we go with the plan to to repair these old and decrepit Lifts and not go with an elevator lets rethink the repair of the lifts. The complaint with the lifts is that they seem unsafe, and no body is willing to ride them. Fixing them may fix that problem, replacing them with a Elevator , paid for by WPRF is better. All around.

The additional of an elevator is a major, really major, undertaking.

BTW this situation has been going on unresolved for over a year now, maybe longer. It is time to make a decision and fix the problem. Right now none of the Villagers will ride the lifts to get to the second floor. Actually the second floor is closed

Now lets talk about the Village Cam. State law says that we must have a licensed Cam in the Village. At this time we do not. Your knowledgeable President has decided to continue this even though it is against the Law.  In the mean time he has UCO pay for the training necessary to get Don Foster a License. So after just 18 hours of Online Instruction and a test, we will have a licensed Cam, paid for by UCO, specifically his friend, Dave Israel.

Whoaaa!!

Yes he meets the minimum requirements, but not mine, not yours either. We want more than "No Experience". And you should too. I want some years of experience on the job in that position. This job puts the Cam in a position to cost us or save a lot of money. Let him get a job as a trainee under a real Cam.

Are we not entitled to more that playing nice with Israel's friends?

Perhaps we should rethink the salary for this job. Going cheap is not always the best way.

Major Dirty Deeds

ANOTHER DIRTY DEED BY  ED BLACK AND DAVID ISRAEL. 

By now, most of you are probably familiar with one Donald Foster AKA Don Ho Ho. He prints his stories and recipes in the UCO Reporter. When our CAM Ted Herlie resigned Ed Black, Donald’s closest friend gave him the position of acting CAM. Mr. Foster has no experience as a CAM so ED BLACK and DAVID ISRAEL decided to have UCO pay him to go to school and get a license. Mr. Ho Ho is considered our CAM in training and is going around the village in our golf cart acting as if he knows everything about being an experienced CAM.  Truth is,  he knows nothing about taking responsibility for  maintaining a development as huge as Century Village and   30 hours of schooling with   a license will not qualify him for this job.

There is also a rumor that when and if Mr. Ho Ho is given his license, he will be paid a salary by UCO; albeit not as big as an experienced  CAM but nevertheless, a salary. UCO will be paying for an inexperience CAM solely because Donald (HO HO)  Foster is a friend of ED Black.

Does that make you mad or will you continue to snooze  and say who cares?

Forced Arbitration is Unamerican

Forced-arbitration clauses, found in the fine print of contracts, also typically bar aggrieved parties from pressing their claims as a group in a class action, often the only practical way for individuals to challenge corporations. In addition, corporations effectively control the arbitration process, including the selection of the arbitrator and the rules of evidence, a stacked deck if ever there was one.

Pretty much the way UCO operates in the availability of space for electioneering.

What this means that if you have a grievance against a large Corporation, say a Comcast or your Cell Phone Company. You must arbitrate it. You cannot sue as part of a Class Action. The arbitrators are picked and chosen by your antagonist. So that is what is called a stacked deck.

The November DA

So what happened at the Delegate Assembly this last Friday? First off the haters were out in force. While Stu Richland was commenting on for the good of the order, the Mighty Bully, David Israel, started to complain about the fact that Stu was lecturing and he, didn't need it. So then Israel started to lecture Stu. Ridiculous!

The County people that are enforcing the rules explained what was going on with the Golf Course. This is the lowdown. The laws say that the property must be mowed to a height of 7 inches, back for 25 feet. The Enforcers had a meeting with the owners and he agreed to  mow the lawn 7" and 50' back, which exceeds the law. This is being checked and the lawn is in the process of being cut.

And what happened to the fine? We don't know.

The Honor Flight was talked about and they still need money. The Korean Vets are invited. Suggestions were made for the excess budget money that UCO has should be donated to this flight That way there would be no need to ask, beg, for donations from everybody in the Village. After all the excess money in the budget is ours. $50,000 solves the problem. We have an excess of over $200,000.

Note this. The PBSO has put us on notice. The cops will be ticketing speeders (max speed is 25) in the Village. This will be a concerted and serious action.

I don't understand the worry about the number of voting Delegates still in attendance. After all we had nothing to Vote upon.

Why is it we are all concerned about the status of our roads and when and how will we fix them? In the meantime Eva is having the Clubhouse parking lot and the necessary striping done? I believe it is all done already.

MORE BS FROM BC

At the delegate assembly yesterday, Barbara Cornish our esteemed VP of UCO pleaded with the delegates to attend the bid committee. She reminded them it is their money UCO is spending and suggested they come to the meeting to see how it  is being spent. The problem is, she neglected to say that David Israel told Dom Guarnagia, the chair of the committee at the time, that the Bid committee was irrelevant.  In other words people, the bid committee is worthless because David is going to spend your money anyway he wants whether you like it or not. So why bother, just go to the pool, cool off and continue to complain to your friends about how UCO is mismanaging the village.

Mistreated, again.

I waited until good and welfare to express my concerns over the fact that the only venue that any can use to call attention to the election was using posters.  I also commented on the fact that we do not have use of the club house or our pools.

Right after I finished, one of my lodge members began to read from Dreiss's column that appeared in the latest edition of the Reporter about a forum etc.  I then took the mike from him and said that the Nov.11 is vets day (which was discussed earlier)  I called their attention to the fact they fought for  Democracy etc. which also means free open elections. Then our leader stopped me by saying that I was insulting the intelligence of  the delegates.  I stopped talking and then the meeting was over.  Jackie Carlin walked past me saying something about my insulting comments.and then walked away.

There were 147 delegates there and towards the end of the meeting Dave asked how many vote cards were turned in = 30 -  so 25% of the so called voters left before the meeting.  What does that say about their attention span and readiness to sit through a voters forum.

One other thing.  Half the parking lot was closed off due to paving.  No one knew this was going on - good example of lack of consideration for those attending the DA.

I guess the meeting will be on the web soon so that you can see for your self what happened.

So it appears that your Blog-master has been called to task for an error that was made in the last issue of the Messenger.

The problem has to due with a error that occurred, a typo maybe. In my recent article I said that Eva was given $25,000 to use as she will. The actual price was $50,000 as was given to her via Fausto which was the left over from a recent budget discussion at the Operations Committee.

NOTICE TO ALL CENTURY VILLAGE RESIDENTS

Re: COMCAST TV

Have you been having problems with your Cable TV? Well if so, call Comcast (1-800-266-2278) and complain continually. They do keep records of your calls.

These last few weeks maybe even longer, I have been having problem after problem, could not even watch a program properly.

Here is a list of some of the things that were happening: Notice which appeared several times - "One Moment Please" - NO Signal - No sound - Picture breaking up - Lines running across screen - Screen completely black or even a frame around your picture in black.

These are some of the things that were happening to myself and others in my building. After getting frustrated and being told each time you have a strong signal coming into your home, and not being able to watch a program properly, I finally called Comcast.

After several appointments and different men coming to check to see what was wrong and saying it was maybe wiring in my home or my Television, I finally got to speak to someone from Comcast who finally (I hope) has tried to fix my problem.

After working and checking different connections, he got to speak to his Supervisor, told him of the problems that I and others were having in our building and decided to send someone out to check the building on the outside lines. The next day there was someone who came out and checked. Now, after a day our TV has not had any problem. I sure hope it will remain this way.

I have been speaking to other people in our village from Camden, Chatham Kent, Salisbury, Sussex, and Wellington, and apparently they too have been having the same problems. My only suggestion to all of you out there is to keep on calling Comcast and complaining, ask to speak to their Supervisor. I have been told by a Supervisor that there might be a major problem here in Century Village with our cable lines.

So Folks, call Comcast if you're having problems and keep calling until you get satisfaction. We are paying Comcast for TV through our maintenance and we desire better than the service we are getting. Also, I was told by the Supervisor that they will give a rebate from the time you started to call for your problem.

At the last Executive Board meeting, Marilyn brought this up and asked for help. The response was remarkable and over whelming, after she finished her remarks and ask for help the Committee did nothing. It was as if she didn't speak. They went on as business as usual. Guess who chairs this Committee of helpful Villagers? Thats right, Mr.Know-it all himself, David Israel!

Our True Choice.

Isn't it time we stopped fighting over the way UCO is run and did something about it?

The answer is quite simple. The problem is around the President and his Coterie They have run this place long enough.

If you look at what is happening and what has happened you will see that the lust for Power drives it all. Israel's lust for Power.

Even if Israel is really not going run in the Election in March he is still trying to influence it. He wants his trainee to be put in the Presidents chair.

The reason that he don't announce his withdrawal is that he needs to exert his will on us all.

Would it not be better if he were to announce his withdrawal now, and we can all get on with the business of electing our true choice?

My Views

So, I am a member of the United Civic Association. Why am I not on the UCO Email list. Is it so hard to recognized that not only must you be a member United Civic Organization, but you also must be a friend of the Bully Boy, Dave Israel. Or else no email!

So, I have watched and listened to the Executive Board meeting last week. I have few observations and comments.

First off I see that Gordetzer is up to her old tricks. When she is given the control of the meeting, as she was, in order to run the votes for By-Law changes she immediately let it be known that all comments will be limited. Limited to the point that the Commenter does not finish and his point is never made. Even if you are an elected member of this Committee. As was done to Stew Richland, twice.

It seems as if Dave Israel sees his chair at this Committee, at least, as a place to vent and use a sarcastic mouth to the elected members. As he did with a remark that a teacher with 54 honorable years in the field would be sent up to the principle's office if he did not shut up.

Aside from the fact, that I, as the Blog-master, is not privy to any of the UCO Emails, why are all us not privy to the minutes?

Jackie Carlin ranted about how a elected member suggested that the member votes should be accompanied with reasons incensed her as is evidenced with the remark "how dare you?" She felt that this is the place for secret votes with secret reasons. Demagogic don't you think?

Good ole Boy, Bully Boy, Dave Israel, threatened to close the meeting if arguments were continued. The fact that this is a tried and true method to end the discussions before a vote not withstanding.

A funny thing happened. Mr. Israel complained that WE have to stop going to the Lawyer 3 or 4 times to get a opinion on the same issue. What is funny is that he is the only guy going to his lawyer.

As usual the Chair and his disciplines lost sight of the reason for this Committee. It is to advise the Delegates. It is not to be decisions for the Delegates. All matters that are brought up for a vote at this Committee should be brought before the Delegate assembly.

A chief means for Villagers to hear and weigh the ideas of the candidates is via debates. Where do we have them? When?

Again they voted down the Term Limit proposal, with only the opposition having a chance to explain why, the proponents were kept quiet.

Did you expect a different outcome in the Voting? What with the same voting people on this Committee and as on all the other Voting Committees?

A last thing, the Elections are 5 months away, the Bully Boy has opened up the Electioneering period by his article in the Reporter. Now how does the competition get to reply? He or She is not welcome in the Clubhouse, at the Pools, on any of the lawns or even to be published in the Reporter.

Does that sound like a fair playing field to you?

Hello Mr. and Mrs. Century Village and all our residents around the globe.

Yes, I do read the UCO Reporter.  In Jody Lebel’s column, “Are we losing our culture in Century Village?”  hit the nail on the head, especially if you attended the Executive Board meeting the other day. The article references the fact that things change and not for the better.  We are experiencing a loss of culture, values, and the decay of civility. Why is this happening?  Dr. Stein suggests that in the early days of Century Village many highly educated professionals decided to retire here. She goes on to reflect that  “over time it has been her experience that as the level of education of the residents declined”  the problems have increased.  Perhaps this explains some of the events that occurred at the Executive Board meeting.

In Ruth Bernhard’s column she reminded us that the  “Executive Board members are important because they VOTE on matters.” Many of these so-called “matters” deal with the rules  that govern UCO.  Since the election cycle is fast approaching, Ms. Bernhard has encouraged those who want to run for this important committee fill out the biography form, and on that form is space to state what  “your intentions will be if you are elected,” and outline your views on important issues and how they benefit the community.

Based on the criteria outlined in her article on the Executive Board,  it is implied that those who win these positions will take an active role when issues are presented to them for  action. This means they will  actively participate in all discussions provide, clear thoughtful  reasons for their positions, and respect the opinions of those Board members that oppose your views.

Like all opinion writers it is important to establish context for my views. I will do so now.

More than fifty years ago, standing before me was my four year old precious and intelligent son, asking me for permission do something.  Exercising my parental prerogative, I said, “No!”  My son quickly responded, “Why!”  I then learned that even a four-year old is entitled to a reason.  This was a valuable lesson learned.

As a teacher we were trained to elicit critical thinking  on the part of the student by couching your questions in such a manner that students were forced to provide thoughtful answers to questions.  The teacher would then use one students response to encourage other to question, challenge or expand on a student’s response,  This was known as the Socratic Method of teaching.  This method requires that the teacher makes a concerted effort to include all students in the discussion.  No one was allowed a free pass. This technique was most useful in analyzing “cause and effect” issues, motives,  consequences.

When a candidate wins  an election it presupposes that when you accept the job, you are going to make a contribution for the good of the public, the citizenry of Century Village.  That means that you will not disappoint your self and your constituents. Every member of the Executive board must live up to the highest standards of ethical conduct

This means accepting as their duty, indeed as their noble duty, to support openly, proudly, and as generously as they possibly can the values that they have recognized as right and true.

At this Executive Board meeting two very important by-law changes were presented for evaluation, discussion, and a vote. The first was fairly moved on.  This by-law stated that any issue would be presented to the Delegate Assembly and they would have the final word on the issue.

The second, and most emotional and indeed volatile, was the question of term limits. The issue was presented and most of the committee members rejected term limits. However, it is not the result of the motion that is the crux of my article, it is the process by which the issue handled. 

When the Chair asked for comments,  most of the committee sat mute. They offered nothing,  They had nothing to contribute. They sat there, docile, ready to accept the ideology that had been drummed into them by our UCO President.

When I stood up to make my case, I demanded that those who voted against the measure to explain their vote. Convince me, with logic, with understanding of the issue, that I am wrong and you are right. 

I made my case as passionately as I could.  Yes decibel level began to go up. So what! I am passionate on issues that could change the direction of life in Century Village. One women, confusing my passion for the issue, thought that I was rude, and disrespectful to the Committee and had no right to display my passion as I did. All during this discourse there was little to no evidence that, on the most part there were no living, thinking people in the room. I realized I was in a room populated with people and I had no clue to what they were thinking. People who are voting on important issues should share their views. That is why they are on the committee. That is why I called them to task. 

Lets take a short multiple choice test about what occurred at the Executive Board meeting.  This  quiz is aimed at those who said nothing at the meeting.

To summarize the events that took place at the Executive Board meeting. We had two major proposals submitted for consideration.  There was virtually no discourse, the vast majority of the committee sat in silence,  they did not participate in any positive way, offered nothing on either side of the issues. Then why are they there?  What is their function if they don’t contribute any ideas?  Then came the vote. This silent majority voted no without providing any rational to explanation  why they voted the way they did.  What  a disserve to those who voted them to this committee to do something and they did nothing.

Every man, every women  of any committee, who has taken up the commitment to serve their community should ask themselves these questions: Am I humble and do I listen to everybody, If you don't ask those questions, your governance will not be good.

In the end those that attempted to bring some semblance  of process to the meeting wound up being punished for thinking and being honest.

What we got was the good, the bad, and the ugly in the way the meeting was conducted.

The Good of the Order

So the Editors in the UCO Reporter, under orders from the Littleman, David Israel, no doubt, are promoting the abolishment of the Good and Order section.

So I ask you where does the average Delegate get a spot to voice his concerns. Where can anybody voice a complaint or even a suggestion for the Good of the order, or for the good of CV? If the Delegate opens his mouth in any other section he will be struck down by the chair, maybe even insulted and shamed. The only place we have to voice our concerns is at the end of the meeting, in For The Good of the order. 

So Joy Vestal, that great and impartial Editor, under orders no doubt, from the littleman, is beginning a campaign to get rid of that section.

What gets me, Israel cares not for Roberts rules, as is evidenced by his disregard for the rules, when it goes against him unless, it is to his advantage. So this is just another move to silence the Malcontents.

Public Office Seekers

Hello Mr. and Mrs. Century Village and all our residents around the globe.

Why do some people seek public office?

H.L. Mencken described politicians as "men who, at some time or other, have compromised with their honour, either by swallowing their convictions or by whooping for what they believe to be untrue."

I was shocked at how Dave Israel took advantage of his position as chair of the Executive Board to stoke his own ego by describing his achievements as UCO President.  First he rolled his head when Olga observed that there was an absence of a level playing field in UCO elections.  Then Dave countered with what he hoped would not be a  “self-serving”  description of his tenure as UCO President.  His Freudian slip of the tongue when he said that he was finishing up his “6^th term” was very telling.  He went to describe how difficult the job was, how much experience and knowledge it required. Dave said that to do the job one needed an historical perspective about Century Village. He opined that new people did not have this historical perspective, thus they could not qualify for the office of UCO president.

How does one acquire this historical perspective?  Dave acquired this gift like so many other UCO officers by volunteering, being appointed to committees, and then running for office.  UCO has had many Presidents and Vice-Presidents serving Century Village since its inception as a retirement community.  Every serving officer came from the ranks of volunteers and from the election process.  That is how candidates obtain historical perspective.  For Mr. Israel to imply that he, and only he understands this so called “historical perspective” will lead to his being given a seat next to Zeus on Mt. Olympus.

Dave Israel believes that the UCO President’s job is complex, and a real test of a person’s competence and intelligence and only he has these gifts.  This is an  example of a person  whose ego is so large that he truly believes that he knows better than everyone else and wants to impose his will on those who hang on to his coat tails.

What Dave also fails to mention that there are quite a few ex-UCO Presidents and Vice-Presidents that had been in office for many years.  Thus, based on Dave’s own criteria they also could fill the job of UCO President because they have the gift of “historical perspective.”

One more observation about “historical perspective.”  Part of the history of Century Village and UCO was the acceptance of term limits.  All past administrations adhered to this time honored tradition.  Then along comes Dave Israel,  a candidate running for office desirous to feed his large vanity because he wants to have some title and imagine that there is some illusory glamour in holding some lever of political power.

"Vanity remains to him," Mencken wrote, "but not pride." 

I wonder if Mencken was thinking about Dave Israel when he wrote this!!!!!

Same old same old...

Hello Mr. and Mrs. Century Village and all our residents around the globe.

I attended the election committee meeting and I must congratulate Anita for doing a great job as the moderator. Hard job when most of the members are part of every UCO committee.

Have you ever read a detective novel?  You open the book, read  page one, hoping that the hook of interest will pull you into the story line.  If it does, and the author has imbedded  lots of red herrings to throw you off, and at the end, you close the book, smile you feel satisfied, it was a good read.

The elections committee was not a good read.  It was more like the Titanic heading for an iceberg.  This meeting was a classic example of the “same old, same old.”

Above all, if fairness is a value we care about, the voting system process that we were presented with is an offence to any conception of fair political representation.

For 54 years I have taught my students what democracy means.  The voting system allows the public to feel the complexity and range of views that candidates wish to share with them. Public debate and argument is an integral part of the democratic process.  The public deserves no less. They do not deserve restrictive political debate in which the group in power, and often behind closed doors, control and dictate the nature of and rules by which elections are conducted here in Century Village.

Lets review some of the issues discussed at the meeting.

Each candidate would file a biography, which outlines their education, past involvement with UCO,  and a very brief summary of why they are running for office and what they hope to accomplish.  This form is submitted to the UCO reporter along with a photo of the candidate and then it will be published in the UCO Reporter just prior to the election.  That's how the Delegate Assembly gets to learn about the slate of candidates running for office.

One of the assumptions of this process is that every voting delegate actually reads the UCO Reporter.  I write this with tongue-in-cheek. Lets assume that this is true, that all the delegates do read the UCO Reporter, do we really expect our delegates to evaluate the qualifications  of the candidates based on such limited information.  It’s like expecting a theologian  to be inspired by the Readers Digest version of the Bible. 

Another fallacy is the candidates forum.  This was a clumsy attempt to show how  benevolent UCO can be by providing a solution to the problem of having the Delegate Assembly meet the candidates.  The chair said the Candidates Forum was  used in the past, but did pose a problem because the election committee expected close to 20 candidates to run for the Executive Board and speculated on the number of prospective candidates to fill the open UCO positions. Naturally the venue for this event would be the Club House. One wonders how they could get permission to use the theater for this event when the Emperor and Empress denied this type of event to the Plebeians.

One sage observer quipped that the forum could last five hours but that’s fine.  Another, jumped in and said you cannot expect the Delegates to sit through an event like this, and how many do you expect to show up.  Who will moderate the event?  No response when this question was posed.  What a charade!  What can be concluded from this? Those involved could not care less about fair play and the political process here in the Village.

A defender of the status quo said that candidates could post flyers on Association bulletin boards announcing that they are running for office along with their phone number to invite the candidate to their Association meeting.  Good idea?  Well it takes a great deal of leg work to get to all the Associations. A volunteer posts the announcement, walks on to the next building etc. However,  there are many mean spirited people who, for what reason(s) known only to themselves, rip the poster off the bulletin boards.  Other associations have their bulletin boards encased in glass so no announcement can be posted.  Some  associations will not allow notices to be displayed and pull them off as a matter of Association policy. Do you know that there are at least 30 plus associations that do not have any bulletin boards at all. “Bodinga”  No wonder so few Delegates attend meetings. Wow, its not posted. How then do we communicate with these residents. Maybe with a broadband connection? Let us assume that all Associations did play fair and invite the candidate(s) to their meetings for a “meet and greet,”  and knowing that the election is in March,  limits the effectiveness of this process.

If fairness is a value we all cherish, then I ask why is the President of UCO allowed to “toot his horn,” present his bio and boast what he feels is his legacy as UCO president in the Reporter when others are denied equal access to this forum. One wonders when the President’s article was written, since the Reporter staff needed time to prepare for publication. One could only assume that it was done prior to the Election Committee meeting held last week. This is another example of how Dave and his cohorts,  respect the fairness doctrine we care about, and how they view the voting system. It  is an offense to any conception of what the democratic process stands for.

This grotesque and unfair voting system must change!!! Like the message in the song, “What’s New, How’s UCO Treating You?”  It’s bizarre at its best, and as a voting system it is an offense to all those who believe in the idea that free elections matter and how fair they are.

So I see from the article in the Reporter that the Great ones is wavering. Once he had remarked that he was not going to run again now I see that he has reopened that option. He might run after all. Bad news for all!

After reading his little article on "what I have accomplished" as President of UCO. I see that he is, as usual, taking advantage of his position as THE PRESIDENT and electioneering in this paper. Note here that by his rules, public or overt none of the candidates can electioneer in this paper, or in the club house, or at the pools, or anywhere in Century Village. That is except for THE PRESIDENT.
