Karen Brand, the lady
who narrowly escaped the flames in her burning apartment tells me that the
smoke alarm did not sound. She was awakened by the smell of smoke. Judging from
the devastation in her unit it is obvious she escaped a fiery death by the skin
of her teeth. A few more moments and she would have been trapped in her
bedroom. It is not only a caution to others to check their smoke alarms but
gives rise to the question of how one would escape a fire such as this. Her
unit on the third floor has only one exit, Karen had to run past burning
furniture to escape. What would you do if you were trapped and unable to get
out the only exit ? What could you do if you are unable to move quickly like
many residents of CV. Why are there no fire escapes ?
