Ad infinitum ad nauseum, we have been hearing from Dave about his precious wifi and the need to have it now, right now, or presumably we will all sink into the morass of backwards people world. Perhaps because of these ravings and all his machinations about getting wifi back in the budget any which way, I may have been paying more attention to computer stories in the news, Now don't get me wrong. I own computers. We support the industry buying computers for gifts for grandchildren! We have wifi - a secure wifi. We use computers in our daily life and used them in past work experience so we are not Luddites. However -----------
Computers are not the be all and end all of life as we know it. Day after day we read of stories of identity theft and the vulnerability of the elderly in that area. We all get that awful spam and garbage emails no matter how many screeners we use. We are always updating security and virus software. It is not so simple as to just get wifi and everyone will buy a computer and look at pictures of their grandchildren and live happily ever after.
So now what do we hear of computers and systems that are based on them? Hmmmm...... Aha! the healthcare websites have a major software problem and keep crashing or refusing to allow all info to be entered and poor follow thru. They are working on it but there are still major issues and no real promise of a timely fix. And what about the Common Applications form for this year? For those of you without grandchildren applying for college, this is a form good for most colleges and is supposed to save time for the applicant in applying to multiple colleges. Well, not this year. It seems to be ruining apps and essays and what not. So are computers good - yes, but are they perfect - no.
And neither is wifi at present. Dave knows this but insists on spending more money uselessly, wasting our hard earned money on a system that will not work and, after votes that turn it down he persists in coming after it. Why? That is the question. His legacy, as is claimed? Some legacy if we put in a crappy system that doesn't work right from the get go, that is slow as molasses, needs ugly 65 foot towers plus installations on top of buildings, does not transmit very well and will need a great deal of adjustments and purchases in order to be secure and oh, of course, what about the inevitable huge amounts of help that will be needed by old and new users of computers on the system? Does that mean we have to add more paid people to our budget? How high will the monthly fees be? Why can't we wait for a better system after more research, more advances and more proposals on the job to be done? These and other questions remain, a lot of other questions with no answers.
So now Dave suddenly says that we will have $2 in the budget for wifi and simply put it in a reserve account for later as he supposedly concedes that wifi at present is not a good idea for us. HA! We have heard that before, about reserves. Remember all the reserves we used to have? Well, we are now walking and splashing thru them. Who will make sure that Dave does not do this again and use the wifi money for the unwanted and not for our purposes of wifi or even for something else he dreams up?
There are many issues to be discussed, Having money build up in a reserve account for the future is not necessarily a bad idea but it is a bad idea right now as the situation stands, so vote NAY on the budget until Dave is out of office and has no control over our budget.
we are living still with someone else's "legacy" - it's called the Millenium Agreement
ReplyDeleteYou bet! and we must prepare for the time when it expires so we get a much more beneficial deal for us.But that also takes a leader who will do that. "nuff said!
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteHere are two examples of cities with wifi issues. Obviously they have much larger reserves than CV does.
